Tree-mendous response to Maghull shrub appeal

An appeal by Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) for woodland themed shrubs from the local community saw donations of more than 200 mature shrubs by the community.

Dr Frank Sharp (FOMD trustee) said:

“Many of the plants we received have huge sentimental value and we wish to convey a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their amazing support which not only demonstrates the community spirit but also how the pandemic has drawn people closer to nature.

“Building on last year’s successful crowdfunding we’ve launched a new project (www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/woodend) to raise £5,000 to continue the huge challenge of improving this woodland area with further plants.

“We have received a terrific boost and feel privilege to be partnered with our local Co-op as one of their charities of the year until October 2021.”

Co op manager Becky Wicksted added:

“Maghull Co-op will ‘donate money for nothing’, if customers simply sign up to be a Co-op member and choose a ‘cause’. Every time a customer uses their membership card we’ll donate to this charity.

In addition, Rev. David Hamlett (FOMD member) said:

“We would like to express our immense gratitude to Mike Stock (MD of MJS) for donating £500 enabling Derek and Jonathan Aitken from Aughton’s Gorse Hill Nature Reserve to create our bespoke beautiful rustic ‘welcome sign’.

“Derek has only made these bespoke signs for their nature reserve previously, but because of his cherished memories of living and playing in the area, when as a 10-year-old he moved to Woodend in 1938, he undertook this specialised work for material cost only.

“This beautiful welcoming sign at the entrance of Maghull represents so much more because of his contribution.”
