Councillors reject ‘ugly’ retirement living scheme

Maghull folk are celebrating after Sefton councillors rejected proposals for an ‘ugly’ retirement living scheme at the former Royal British Legion on Liverpool Road South.

The development would have contained 23 one bedroom and 21 two bedroom retirement living apartments.

The committee considered the report of the Chief Planning Officer, recommending the application be approved subject to conditions, and also received a representation from Councillor John Sayers, ward councillor, in objection to the application.

The plans were thrown out with councillors told that the proposed building was not a high quality design and out of character with the local area due to its excessive height and incongruous design.

Concern had been expressed by Maghull Town Council, who believed the four storey development was “not consistent” with the Parkhaven character area.

A planning committee which met in February had considered the application, but it was deferred to enable further discussion with the applicant, McCarthy and Stone, to address concerns over the ‘viability assessment, the affordable housing contribution and the building design.’
